Grassland management for the Winter

Grassland management for the Winter

Grassland management for the Winter 🐮

With poor weather conditions over the last few weeks, farmers have been forced to pick and choose which paddocks to graze as ground conditions differed across the farm.

The target average farm cover from mid-September to 1st October should be 400kg DM/LU or 1,000kg DM/Ha with a rotation length of around 40 days by 1st October.

If farms are struggling to build covers there are a number of steps that can be taken here are some steps dairy farmers can take:

✅ Increase the use of supplements i.e. concentrates or silage.
✅ Remove underperforming cows from the milking platform.
✅ Remove calves and heifers from the milking platform.
✅ Bring zero-grazed grass from an outside block back home to feed.

Measuring grass weekly will help you understand how much grass you have and allow you to plan for housing this Winter.
